Coursework Final

Medium Oil on Canvas

Yay finally I finished my coursework, I am getting sick of sniffing turpentine D: . There are two canvases in this artwork, the top representing “purity” and the bottom “corruption” or “sins”. In the top canvas lotus and children all symbolises purity or innocence. The colour of the girl’s clothes, pink and white further emphasizes this as they make her look like a lotus flower herself. In the bottom canvas, object that like trash at first glance would begin to look rather out of place as you scrutinize the painting (since when would you find lipsticks and money in ponds). Most objects in the pond symbolises different sins, for example poker cards represents gambling ( you can guess the rest :D). The fishes in the pond are desperately swimming upwards towards fresher water as they find the water to polluted for survival. The contrast brought about in this artwork could be interpreted in different ways, thins are not what they appear on the surface or the line between good and evil is not as defined as you think.
Reflections. I am quite happy with the overall effect of this artwork (I thought they looked rather odd when I had painted them one by one), though I would think that it could definitely be improved by darkening the water and making the thrash look less idealistic >: Thats all… I need to start studying now…Argh. Heeeey I like this painting. It’s a good concept, talking about damage to the environment (omg like Taihu???). But seriously, yeah I can also interpret it in another way: it reflects the problems that our environment has to put up with as the world globalises. And the child is just trying to cleanse the world one step at a time, but it is naive thinking.
I dno :S
But the girl’s face looks a little too white leh… :/

I think it’s really interesting that your coursework actually addresses a pressing issue present in society today – pollution. I feel that it is really meaningful. And i think the rubbish at the bottom of the pond (?) is very well painted, can tell that you put in alot of effort and paid attention to all the details up to the reflection of the bottle(: i think that the proportion of the child’s face could be worked on though, her nose seems a little weird, like a bit too long/:
BUT YOUR PAINTING SKILLS ARE SUPERB! GOOD JOB! :D
